How to Check Your PC Specs in Windows 11 Before Selling or Upgrading

You can capture a useful PC specification in Windows 11 without installing another application. Settings gives the quickest CPU, RAM and Windows summary; Task Manager shows practical component overviews; System Information adds motherboard and firmware detail; DirectX Diagnostic Tool helps identify graphics and driver information.

Windows cannot reliably name every exact retail part. A power supply, case, cooler and some board-partner graphics cards still need a receipt or physical label. The goal is an honest specification, not filling uncertain gaps with guesses.

Start with this six-line specification template

CPU: manufacturer and full model
GPU: chip/model; board-partner and exact card if confirmed
RAM: total capacity; module details if known
Storage: drive model, capacity and type
Motherboard or PC model: manufacturer and product
Windows: edition, version and system type

Fill only what the evidence shows. “NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070” may be a correct GPU identity without proving whether the physical card is an ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI or another variant. Likewise, “32GB” does not tell a buyer how many RAM modules are installed.

1. Get the clean summary from Settings

Open Settings > System > About. Under Device specifications, copy the processor name, installed RAM and system type. Under Windows specifications, record the edition and version. Microsoft’s current device-information guide uses this route for the basic model and specification view.

The system type tells you whether Windows and the processor are 64-bit, but it does not identify the motherboard, storage, graphics-card manufacturer, power supply or case. Treat this screen as the start, not the whole listing.

2. Use Task Manager for the hardware overview

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Performance, then open CPU, Memory, Disk and GPU in turn. Enlarge the window so model names are not cut off. Record the CPU model, total memory, each disk’s model where shown, and each GPU name.

Memory shows useful installed-capacity and slot information on many PCs, but it may not expose every DIMM’s manufacturer or part number. Disk entries can distinguish SSD and HDD and often show a model, although storage controllers and virtualisation can affect what appears. A laptop may list integrated and dedicated GPUs separately; include both.

Task Manager is a convenient overview, not a certificate that every field describes the exact retail product. Microsoft’s system configuration tools guide describes it as a system monitor and performance tool.

3. Open System Information for motherboard and firmware details

Press Windows + R, enter msinfo32 and press Enter. In System Summary, record System Manufacturer, System Model, BaseBoard Manufacturer, BaseBoard Product, BIOS Version/Date and Processor. This is especially useful for prebuilt systems, where the computer model can matter as much as the board name.

Do not turn a generic value such as “Default string”, “To be filled by O.E.M.” or a bare board code into a confident retail model. Photograph the motherboard label or use the original system manufacturer’s service-tag lookup when the software result is incomplete.

4. Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool for display details

Press Windows + R, enter dxdiag and press Enter. The System tab records the operating system, processor, memory and DirectX version. Each Display or Render tab can show the graphics-device name, manufacturer, memory figures and driver details.

This is useful when a system has more than one graphics device or when you need a second check against Task Manager. It still normally identifies the graphics processor rather than the exact physical card. For a sale, inspect the card’s label and photographs if the board-partner model affects the description.

5. Be precise about storage and RAM

Capacity alone is not an identity. A “1TB SSD” description should become a manufacturer/model plus capacity where Windows exposes it. Task Manager may provide the disk model; Device Manager under Disk drives provides another built-in check. Do not publish a serial number in a public sales listing.

For RAM, record total installed capacity first. If the number of modules, speed or part numbers matter, Windows’ normal screens may be incomplete. Physically checking labels requires shutting down, unplugging the PC and following the system manufacturer’s access and safety instructions. Laptop memory may be soldered and should not be treated as a removable module.

6. Know when Windows cannot answer

A normal Windows inventory cannot reliably identify the PSU, case, CPU cooler, case fans or every exact retail graphics-card variant. Use the original invoice, packaging or physical model label. Never infer a PSU’s wattage from the graphics card, and never open a power supply to identify it.

7. Cross-check before selling or upgrading

Compare the four built-in views and resolve disagreements. If two tools name the same CPU and GPU, confidence rises. If one reports a generic motherboard or a disk disappears, mark it for a physical or manufacturer check. Save a private screenshot set if useful, but crop the device name, serial numbers, account name and other personal information before sharing it.

For an upgrade, component identity is only the first step: compatibility, dimensions, firmware support, power and cooling still need separate checks. For a sale, include the exact confirmed model, honest condition and clear photographs rather than dumping an unedited diagnostics report.

8. Turn the specification into a useful GPUsed enquiry
