How to Identify the Exact Graphics Card in Your PC

“RTX 3070” or “Radeon RX 6800” identifies a GPU family, not always the exact graphics card. A reliable quote or compatibility check may also need the VRAM version, board partner, retail model and part number. Use the quickest software route first, then move to stronger evidence only when the extra detail matters.

1. Start in Windows Device Manager

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager and open it.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Record every adapter exactly, including suffixes such as Ti, SUPER, XT or XTX.
  4. If both integrated and dedicated graphics appear, note both rather than assuming the first result is the card you want to sell.

If Windows shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, do not use that as the GPU name. Microsoft explains that this is a generic driver used when the manufacturer-specific driver is unavailable. Use the system or GPU manufacturer’s support route rather than downloading a driver from an unknown site.

2. Cross-check with dxdiag

Press Windows key + R, type dxdiag and press Enter. Read each Display or Render tab available. Record the device name and driver details, but keep dedicated graphics memory separate from shared system memory.

This second Windows view is useful when a laptop or desktop has several graphics devices. It is still not guaranteed to name the exact cooler, board partner or retail part number.

3. Use the graphics vendor’s information screen

For NVIDIA hardware, open NVIDIA Control Panel and select System Information. NVIDIA states that this view provides graphics-card and driver information. For AMD hardware, use the current AMD Software hardware-information and product-support route.

Record what is actually shown. Do not turn a chip vendor into the board maker: “NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080” does not tell you whether the physical card is a Founders Edition, ASUS TUF, MSI Ventus, Gigabyte Gaming OC or another model.

4. Resolve the VRAM and exact model

Memory capacity can distinguish cards that share a family name. NVIDIA, for example, lists both 10GB and 12GB RTX 3080 variants, while the 12GB RTX 3080 Ti is a different GPU again. Copy the suffix and dedicated-memory figure exactly.

Then look for the board partner and full product name. An invoice, order email or original box is strong evidence if it genuinely belongs to the installed card. Cross-check the part number on the manufacturer’s own product page.

5. Inspect the physical label only when needed

If the exact board identity remains uncertain, shut the PC down, switch the PSU off, disconnect mains power and follow the system manufacturer’s safe-access instructions. Do not remove the GPU cooler or dismantle the card just to identify it.

Photograph the accessible model label sharply enough to read the manufacturer and part number. Keep the serial number private unless GPUsed or another trusted party specifically needs it through a private channel. A cooler photograph can help, but appearance alone is weak evidence because related cards can reuse similar shrouds.

What if the PC does not boot?

  1. Check reliable paperwork, the original order and any existing inventory record.
  2. Inspect an externally accessible system label or window without dismantling the PC.
  3. If competent, follow the manufacturer’s power-isolation instructions and photograph the card label, outputs, power sockets and both sides.
  4. Describe any disagreement between the box, invoice, software or label instead of choosing one silently.

Do not flash a BIOS, alter hardware IDs or install “GPU identifier” software from an unknown source to make the evidence match an assumption.

Desktop card, laptop GPU or integrated graphics?

A laptop GPU with a familiar GeForce or Radeon name is usually part of the laptop’s platform, not a removable desktop graphics card. Integrated graphics shares the processor or system package and may use system RAM. Record the complete laptop or PC model whenever the context is unclear.

For an external GPU enclosure, identify the card and the enclosure separately. A correct GPU name does not establish the host connection or power arrangement.

Clear photographs of the front, back, outputs, power sockets and label are useful when software evidence is ambiguous. Do not post full serial numbers, account names, order numbers or complete diagnostic exports publicly.
