Mechanical hard drives

Hard-drive value depends heavily on exact model, capacity, health, usage and quantity. A clean case cannot tell you what a SMART report can.

GPUsed selectively reviews suitable desktop, NAS and enterprise HDDs. Older low-capacity drives may not be commercially viable individually, while a healthy matching group can be a different proposition.

Record the label before reading the health data

Provide the manufacturer, complete model or part number, capacity, interface, physical size and quantity. Say whether the drive is desktop, NAS or enterprise stock if the label supports that description. For a matching batch, group only the same model and condition; different firmware, capacities or error histories deserve separate rows.

Model, capacity, SATA or SAS interface, 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch size and quantity.

Usage

Power-on hours, start-stop count and workload context where a reliable tool reports them.

Warnings

Reallocated sectors, pending sectors, uncorrectable errors, failed tests, unusual noises or intermittent detection.

Do not stress a drive that is already warning you

Clicking, repeated spin-up, scraping, time-outs and intermittent detection are faults, not invitations to keep retrying. Power the drive down, record the symptom and protect it from further shock. GPUsed is not a data-recovery service, and the quote concerns the hardware rather than any files it contains.

For a working drive, a readable SMART summary can help. Do not crop out warnings, reset attributes or run a needlessly punishing test merely to generate a screenshot. Current, honest evidence is the aim.

Back up and securely erase before it leaves you

Save the data you need first. Then use an erase or sanitisation method appropriate to the drive, your information and your organisation’s policy. Deleting folders or formatting without understanding the method may not make data unrecoverable. If sensitive data must not leave your control, do not sell the drive. Do not email passwords, recovery keys, customer details or screenshots containing private file names as quote evidence.

Pack for shock, not just scratches

  1. Place each drive in an anti-static bag.
  2. Use a proper drive tray or firm cushioning that keeps the unit away from the outer walls.
  3. Prevent drives from striking one another; a stack wrapped once in bubble wrap is not enough.
  4. Use a rigid outer box, fill empty space and follow GPUsed’s sending instructions.

A straightforward submission can receive a personalised quote in as little as 10 minutes. Large SAS batches and unusual enterprise models may need further review. The quote is free and there is no obligation; do not post anything until the route is agreed.

Use the right storage route

For flash storage, use sell used SSDs and NVMe drives. For a business clearance containing storage and other hardware, use sell bulk computer components and place data-bearing devices on a clearly governed sheet of their own.

After delivery, GPUsed checks the identity, condition and proportionate health evidence against the agreed description. Faulty hard drives are unlikely to be suitable except in specific circumstances, so disclose warnings before postage. Approved stock is paid for after inspection, normally on the same day.

A useful HDD submission is factual: label, capacity, interface, power-on hours, SMART warnings, quantity and current state.
